Spring strawberries

Tuesday, March 26, 2019

Sam Haller, left, and Skip Gohl unload 432 individual "clamshells" of strawberries at the Mobile Pantry event in Stratton Saturday morning. Ninety-five households were served with food from the Food Bank for the Heartland, of Omaha. Coordinators were slightly disappointed in the turnout of shoppers, but very thankful for the volunteers who came to help. Co-coordinator JoLyn Hare of Culbertson said there were many single seniors served, and several very large families, of 7, 8 and 9 individuals, for a total count of approximately 240 people. "I would really like to see more senior citizens take advantage of these Mobile Pantry events. They can bring someone to help them, or we usually have volunteers who can help," JoLyn said. There are no income restrictions and no qualification bookwork to fill out. Shoppers, however, must live in Nebraska and bring their own boxes, bags, wagons or collapsible shopping carts, or "muscle." The next Mobile Pantry will be on the Hitchcock County Fairgrounds in Culbertson, Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. (notice the earlier start time again). JoLyn asked shoppers to pay close attention to the starting times of future Mobile Pantrys, which may be affected by the travel time of trucks and and road conditions out of Omaha.
