Indians try to pierce Lancers in the Palace

McCOOK, Neb. — McCook Community College Lady Indians basketball team (21-10) is headed to Scottsbluff Thursday for a second-round, 3 p.m. (MT) Region IX tournament game against Eastern Wyoming (23-8).

After first-round games at various sites across Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska, the remainder of the tournament will be played at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff, home of Western Nebraska Community College.

MCC opened post-season Friday at home with an 87-31 win over Lamar Community College.

The Lady Indians allowed the Lopes just 13 second-half points and just three points in the fourth quarter.

Thursday’s matchup will be the third meeting between MCC and Eastern Wyoming. The Lancers dealt the Lady Indians their first loss of the season Nov. 8 in Torrington, Wyo. – a 90-84 loss in overtime, in a game MCC lead at the half 40-31.

On Dec. 7 at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center Eastern Wyoming dealt MCC its first home loss of the season 90-88 in a game that was tied eight times and the teams traded leads nine times.

MCC was second in the south-sub region in scoring with 85.2 points per game (Western Nebraska averages 90.8). The Lady Indians are shooting 39.7 percent from the field and 26-9 percent from the 3-point line.

Sophomore transfer Hailey Tiles (Rogers, Ark.) leads MCC and is second among players in the south sub-region with 18.4 points per game. Sophomore Sam Hinkle (Parachute, Colo) is averaging 15.1 points per game – fifth most in the south sub-region.

Freshman Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) is averaging 12.4 points per game, shooting 50.0 percent from the field, and 9.8 rebounds, which is second most among players in the south sub-region.

She has also blocked 72 shots on the season, tops in the south sub-region by almost a block per game.

Sophomore Anna Sanjuan is averaging 10.7 points a game, and freshman Nikki Cross is averaging 10-1 points per game.

The Lancers are averaging 79-9 points per game, 41.8 percent shooting, and 32.3 percent from the 3-point line). Sophomore guard Emily Buchanan leads Eastern Wyoming with 17.5 points per game. Backcourt mate Abril Rexach Roure averages 12.1 points per game and freshman Paula Martizez Sanz leads forwards with 11.6 points per game.

Eastern Wyoming was the second-seeded team in the north and opened the tournament at home Friday with an 87-77 seed over north seventh seed Western Wyoming.
