Red Willow County's hippology team places third overall in the nationwide two-day competition at the Denver Western Roundup in conjunction with the Denver stock show. Team members are, from the left, Allison Rippe, Tucker Gillespie, Elisanna Rodewald and Kathlyn Hauxwell. Tucker and Kathlyn also placed in individual portions of the contest. Co-coach Pam Wolford said, "These kids won first at the 4-H Horse Expo in July and have been preparing for nationals since that time." She explained that hippology is a four-part contest in which contestants/teams judge classes of horses, take written tests, and identify everything from weeds to vaccines. They also solve a team problem and present an impromptu solution to a judge. Pam said, "These kids learn as much as first-year veterinary students." The state of Nebraska won the overall state award with four top three teams/individuals. Janet Rippe and Joe Gillespie are also coaches. The Nebraska 4-H Council and the local 4-H council supported the team financially.
