Bison wrestlers set to host 'growing' tourney

Thursday, January 24, 2019

McCOOK, Neb. — Conquerors of Colorado and the Amherst Broncos are among eight teams colliding in Graff Events Center for Friday’s McCook High Wrestling Dual tourney.

‘The tournament has really grown in just one year,” Bison coach Nick Umscheid said as matches will begin at 2 p.m. “We normally have had only five teams but are up to eight. This is a great mixture of teams from all over.”

The Wray (Colo.) Eagles captured last year’s Colorado 1A state team title while most Nebraska fans know all about Amherst’s wrestling dominance.

Amherst currently holds the Class D No. 3 state position, according to newrestle.com.

However, familiar area foes like North Platte and Gothenburg as well as Decatur Communiy (Kan.) will also cover the Graff Events Center mats.

The Ogallala Indians complete this field as McCook should more than make up for weather wiping out Tuesday’s duals with Holdrege and G-Burg.

“It should be a great day of wrestling,” Umscheid observed. “There are several district teams entered so we should get another opportunity to face those teams.”

Remember, district wrestling tournaments are now barely two weeks away.

Rankings update

McCook sophomore Alec Lagan remains No. 6 at Class B 182 pounds, according to newrestle.com this week.

Southwest’s Kaden Guerrero holds that same spot at Class D 145.

Chase County’s Trevor Peterson (170 pounds) and Evan Fisher (195) are both Class C No. 6-rated wrestlers.
