MCC men win 96-94 on road

SEWARD, Neb. – The McCook Community College men had to stage a second-half comeback, but downed the Concordia JVs Thursday 96-94 in the first game of the calendar year to even the Indians season mark at 7-7.

Trailing 52-46 at intermission, the Indians picked up the shooting pace in the final 20 minutes (56.4 percent) to pick up the team’s second win on the road.

Sophomore Ron Rice (New York, N.Y.) scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Indians and picked up seven rebounds to tie for team-high honors with sophomore Peanut Cunningham (Louisville, Kent.), who added 19 points.

Freshman Mardrez McBride (Augusta, Ga.) scored 18 points and freshman Miles Black (Jonesboro, Ga.) added 12 points.

Concordia came out making nine of 17 shots from 3-point range in the first half (52.9 percent) to pace an overall 58.6 percent shooting from the field.

The Bulldogs made 13 of 29 long distance shots for the game (44.8 percent) while the Indians were three of 11 in the first half (27.3 percent); four of seven in the second half (57.1 percent) and seven of 18 for the game (38.9 percent.)

The Indians maintained a 40-29 rebounding edge including 16 on the offensive end and turned the ball over 10 times for the game.

After climbing back to the .500 mark with a 7-7 mark, the Indians return home Tuesday for one of only two games this month at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.

Tuesday’s game with Air Force Prep is set for 5 p.m.

This is a team that handed the Indians their first loss of the year 88-72 Nov. 6 at the Air Force Academy.

After Tuesday, the Indians begin Region IX South Division play with four straight road games starting Jan. 18 and Jan. 19 at La Junta, Colo. against Otero Junior College and Trinidad State.
