NORTON, Kan. Gilbert Martin Janssen, 88, of Norton, died Tuesday (Jan. 1, 2019), at Norton County Hospital in Norton.

He was born on March 29, 1930, to Harm and Caroline (Kamprath) Janssen in Seward, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Gretel Kapp on July 25, 1954 in Norton.

He farmed by Hendley and Arapahoe, Neb., and later moved to Norton and worked for Norton County as a welder. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norton.

Survivors include his wife, Gretel Janssen of Norton; children, Judy and husband, Aldon Pfannenstiel of Norton, Janet and husband, Robert Ledou of Colby, Kan., and Jerry Janssen of Grand Island, Neb.; brother, Wally and wife, Ruth Janssen of Kearney, Neb.; sisters-in-law, Claire Eppinger of Norton, Marlene and husband, Jerry VanMatre of Beaver City, Neb., Charlotte and husband, David Kindall of Norton, Carolyn and husband, Ed Briley of Kansas City, Mo., Kathy Sell of Kearney, Neb., and Donna Janssen of Arapahoe; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Derek; brothers, Bruno and Rhineholt Janssen and brother-in-law, LaDon Eppinger.

Visitation is Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Norton prior to the service. Funeral services follow at 10:30 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Rick Rostek, officiating. Interment will follow at the Norton Cemetery in Norton, with military honors by the Norton American Legion Post No. 63 and Kansas National Guard Honor Guard.
