McCOOK, Neb. — For the second time this season Eastern Wyoming beat the McCook Community College Lady Indian basketball team with the latest coming Friday night at home 90-88.

“It was a very fun competitive game tonight and we just fell short,” MCC Coach Kellen Fernetti said. “My team kept fighting and battling.”

On Nov. 9, the Lancers downed MCC in Torrington 90-84 in overtime before handing the Lady Indians their first loss at home this season Friday.

The teams changed leads nine times, and they were tied eight times. While the Lady Indians got down by 11 points with 1:21 left in the first half, and trailed 51-41 at the half they battled back to take the lead twice in the second half.

Sophomore Hailey Tiles (Rogers, Ark.) led MCC with 26 points (including a 13-for-14 night from the free-throw line). Sophomore Makayla Jones, (Aurora, Colo.) scored 18 points, freshman Makenna Bodette (Colorado Springs) scored 14 points. Sophomore Anna Sanjuan, (Reus, Spain) scored 12 points and freshman Lena Goerke (Hamburg, Germany) scored 11 points.

MCC shot 41.2 percent from the field in the first half and upped that to 43.6 percent in the second half. From the line the Lady Indians made 22 of 28 free throws (78.6 percent).

“I like where we are heading despite the loss. We can learn from this and be better for it,” Fernetti said. “Moving forward, we need a better focus defensively in transition and we have to rebound better.”

MCC did rebound to get win No. 10 on Saturday leading into the semester break.

Details about that victory were included in Monday’s Gazette.
