Friday, October 12, 2018

LINCOLN, Neb. — McCook’s Logan Barenberg and Isaac Hinze have earned a Class B state medal shot after their No. 2 doubles victory this morning.

Barenberg-Hinze raised their awesome season record to 27-3 with an 8-3 consolation win over Adams Central No. 9-seed Gavin Lipovsky/Travis Niemeyer (21-12).

The Bison duo — seeded fourth — will play for fifth place against Hastings’ No. 6 team of Adynn Kusek and Brayden Schram.

They took a tough 8-6 battle from Mount Michael earlier today.

Barenberg, a junior, and freshman Hinze are the lone Bison representatives at Class B state today.

The other four all scored wins on Thursday but dropped their next matches. Wins were all mentioned in Thursday’s Gazette.

Junior No. 9-seed Zion Moyer (29-6) dropped his No. 1 singles match to No. 8 Joel Poland from Kearney Catholic 6-0, 6-3.

Poland later dropped a quarterfinal match to Lincoln Pius X.

Another Star spoiled the Bison quest when K.C. No. 8-seed Landon Seibert stopped McCook senior Syd Wier 6-1, 6-1 in their No. 2 singles second-round match.

Senior Caden Bortner and sophomore Mason Michaelis ran into powerhouse Omaha Skutt during the No. 1 doubles second round.

Skutt’s Asher Kula and Justice Hanmer were actually not seed but rallied to win a 1-6, 6-3, 10-2 decision over No. 8 Bortner/Michaelis (27-8 record). Final details will appear Monday.
