The mixed media art piece, “First Amendment,” created by McCook Public Schools art teacher Deb Goodenberger, is being displayed with other selected pieces at the Art Educators Art Show at the University of Nebraska-Kearney. The show’s theme this year is “Art to Influence.” Goodenberger said the impetus to create the work began when she took a picture of her coffee cup one morning, then painted it realistically to represent an “everyday thing, something expected,” she said. Goodenberger then used a mat medium to glue down newspaper cuttings taken from the McCook Gazette. “Cutting around the cup was a challenge!” she said. The First Amendment ads she cut out from the paper inspired the name of the piece. The Art Educators art show and conference is an annual event at UNK, with the show continuing at the UNK Fine Arts building until Saturday, Oct. 18.
