McCook senior DJ Gross enjoys the Bison win over defending Class B state champion York on Sept. 7 in York. Gross broke the school's all-time tackles record last week vs. Lexington, and now 5-0 McCook prepares for a game at 3-2 Alliance Friday night.

McCOOK, Neb. — Bison football greatness tends to repeat itself in so many ways including McCook’s all-time varsity tackles record.

Just one season after Zach Schlager set a new school mark with 257, current senior DJ Gross broke it again on his first stop against the Lexington Minutemen.

Gross’career tackle total reached 263 before the 48-6 win was finished — and he still has five to possibly eight more games of building on this newest history.

Here are the top five all-time McCook tackles which coach Jeff Gross described as a “pretty elite group of fellas”:

1. DJ Gross 263.

2. Zach Schlager 257.

3. Trent Lyons 252.

4. Jake Schlager 245.

5. Sam Frazier 241.

Zach Schlager has moved on to play football at NCAA Division I Colorado State University where brother Jake just finished his career last fall.

DJ Gross has commited to playing for the University of South Dakota. But for now, he’s focused on helping coach Gross’ Bison win a third state championship. They’re currently 5-0.
