McCOOK, Neb. — In early October, downtown McCook will once again be the site of a men’s and women’s clothing store.

The enterprise — to be known as Main Street Clothing — will open for business in the former Peterson Jewelers building on the southwest corner of the Norris Avenue and B Street intersection.

“We will feature ladies’ clothing, including maternity and plus size apparel, as well as a wide assortment of men’s wear,” said Josie and Carlos Dominguez, who acquired the historic downtown structure soon after Terry Peterson’s retirement from the jewelry business.

“At first, we planned to develop rental spaces in the building, but when Randy Bauer of Gateway posted a picture of us on Facebook, with the news we had bought the building, requests started pouring in for us to open a clothing store,” Carlos said.

As a result, they started exploring the idea and came to the conclusion that was the best use of the space — for McCook and the area — was a clothing store featuring both men’s and women’s styles.

“Shoppers in this part of the state have been hurt by the closing of the J.C. Penney’s stores in McCook and North Platte and the phase-out of the Herberger’s store in the North Platte mall,” Josie explained. “Through Main Street Clothing, we hope to give shoppers a close-to-home option for their clothing shopping.”

Before embarking on the clothing store venture, Josie and Carlos developed an extensive residential rental enterprise in McCook, purchasing and renting and leasing 22 properties in McCook during the past 15 years.

Prior to making McCook their principal residence in 2008, Carlos and Josie had lived in California and Colorado, where Carlos worked for Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon. After several years of commuting from McCook to Aurora, Colo. for work, Carlos retired in 2015 and now serves as the lead security officer at the McCook Ben Nelson Regional Airport.

He will continue that work while assisting Josie at the store following the opening of Main Street Clothing.

“We owe a lot to McCook, which has been a great place to raise our children,” he said.

Their family includes Carlos, who works for Amazon in Kansas City; Bonnie, who operates Massages by Bonnie at the Haircut Company; and Josie, a student-athlete at Hastings College.

Remodeling and redecoration is now in full swing at the soon-to-open clothing store, with a team of local contractors and suppliers doing the work. Getting the building ready for opening are Hoak Exteriors, DEW Construction, Tri-State Awning, Glass Express, Samway Floor Covering & Furniture and Kasha Messersmith Design.
