Trojans, Tigers sweep to set up early showdown

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — The Cambridge Trojans and Dundy County-Stratton Tigers set up a super early showdown with triangular sweeps Thursday evening.

Cambridge’s now 5-0 following wins over visiting RPAC rivals Alma and Bertrand.

The Trojans conquered a tough 27-25 first set before finishing off Alma, 25-17.

Bertrand (2-2 record) battled even closer despite a 25-14 opening setback.

The Vikings took that next set, 26-24, and then battled Cambridge point-for-point before falling 25-23.

No individual Trojan stats were obtained. Cambridge has started the season with five consecutive home-court wins.

However, coach Margo Kent’s team now hits the road where they will face those DC-S Tigers Tuesday evening.

Dundy County-Stratton made a successful season debut on Thursday, defeating two more RPAC rivals in Arapahoe and Hitchcock County at Benkelman.

Senior Grace Frederick’s 11 kills fueled the 25-12, 25-9 victory over Arapahoe.

Classmate Adalene Krutsinger sent seven more killers past the Warrior defense, most coming off junior setter Jessie Freeland’s 24 assists.

Freeland and senior Jera Myers served two aces apiece for DC-S (2-0 record).

Junior Caitlin McCorkle’s 10 digs and two kills from Hannah Utterback highlighted the Arapahoe effort.

The Tigers took a tough 25-23 opener vs. Hitchcock County followed by an impressive 25-7 finisher.

Amazingly, Frederick (11 kills) and Krutsinger (seven) matched their totals from the first win with Adalene adding a Tiger-high 10 digs.

Freeland delivered one more ace than the opener as she totaled 25.

Hitchcock’s Falcons suffered their first defeat this season but did earn a 25-23, 25-16 triumph vs. Arapahoe in this triangular.

No individual stats for the 3-1 Falcons were obtained today.

Senior Chloe Carlson’s three kills powered the Warriors.

Senior Joslyn North and McCorkle each served two aces with Utterback adding one.

Arapahoe (0-3 record) aims for its first win at home tonight against Elm Creek.

In other Thursday matches, Southern Valley’s now 3-0 thanks to a 25-23, 25-10, 9-25, 25-16 win over the Cozad Haymakers.

Wauneta-Palisade shook off a loss to Hitchcock last week and won 25-13, 25-6 at Paxton. Coach Terra Higgins’ Broncos are now 2-1.

Chase County swept through a season-opening match at Haxtun, Colo, by scores of 25-21, 25-16, 25-17.

No individual stats were posted on maxpreps.com from these last three matches before today’s Gazette press deadline. Watch for more results next week.
