Youngest Bison blast off for opening win
McCOOK, Neb. — McCook High’s freshman football team stepped up to its first challenge and trounced Grand Island Northwest 28-14 at Weiland Field Thursday night.
The Bison (1-0) fell behind 6-0 on opening kickoff touchdown return.
However, they responded with four touchdowns from Cole Cappel (nine-yard run), Branson McDonald (six-yard run), McDonald again (three yards) and Dylan Paschall (three yards).
McDonald also ran to two PAT conversions besides his team-high two TDs.
McCook coach Bill Ramsay offered these comments:
This was our first game of the season and I felt we came out very aggressive and did a good job of making plays on both sides of the ball. Offensively we did a nice job of running our offense, and controlling the line of scrimmage, we need to do a better job of taking care of the football, several drives were stopped by turnovers. Defensively we played pretty well, we need to lower our pad level and do a better job of gang tackling. For our first game I thought we played pretty well, we will hit the practice field and work on all areas of our game. The next Freshmen game is Sept. 4 vs the North Platte Bulldogs in McCook.
The McCook freshmen have another home game scheduled against North Platte on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Opening kickoff is set for 5 p.m. at Weiland Field.
