Fern Maxine Warren Reiners

Jan. 20, 1925 - July 15, 2018

McCOOK, Neb. — Fern Reiners went to join her beloved husband, Griff, in Heaven on Sunday, July 15, 2018, from Highland Park Retirement Community. She was 93.

Fern Maxine Warren Reiners was born on Jan. 20, 1925, in Calvert, Kan. Her parents were Eva and Joseph Ray Warren. Fern graduated from Lebanon High School, where she played the trumpet in the school band. During World War II, Fern worked at the McCook Air Base sending coded messages.

Fern married Griffith Reiners on March 12, 1946, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oberlin, Kan. Fern was baptized on Dec. 3, 1948, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Fern and Griff lived in Marion, Neb., before moving to McCook in 1951. Three children were born to this union – Karen, Alan and Janet.

Fern was an excellent cook. Her family especially loved her fried chicken, ham and bean soup, and ham salad.

Fern loved to sing, read, cook, travel, and was known to play practical jokes. One time while visiting relatives on a farm, Mom pushed Dad into the horse tank. Dad came up sputtering. Needless to say, Mom thought it was funnier than Dad did.

Fern worked for many years for the McCook Public Schools in the cafeteria. She loved to clip recipe coupons. Mom even had a recipe for sea scallops which Dad would never have eaten! After they retired, Griff and Fern loved to take short shopping trips, go to garage sales, and travel. Mom retained her sense of humor – she took a “selfie” with her daughters at the age of 91.

Fern is survived by her children Karen (Mervin) Troester, Alan (Karen) Reiners, and Janet (Scott) West; four grandchildren, Julie, Chad, Bryan, and Kelsi; three step-grandchildren, Andrew, Jana, and Dylan; seven great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Griff; unborn infant son; parents; and sisters. Our hearts ache at Mom’s passing but we also rejoice that she is safe in Heaven and Mom and Dad are reunited once again.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home from 2 to 8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2018, at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Lonnie Felcher officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name to KNGN Radio, 38005 Rd 717, McCook, NE 69001.
