One killed, two injured in ATV accident
CHAMPION, Neb. — One man was killed and two other people suffered life-threatening injuries in the rollover of an ATV in southwest Chase County early Sunday morning.
The Imperial Republican reports that Justin McRoberts, 35 years old and a passenger, was thrown from the ATV and died at the scene.
The driver, 34-year-old Devon Barrington, was trapped underneath the ATV, and another passenger, 33-year-old Nicole Duncan, walked about four miles for help.
A helicopter landed at the scene and flew Barrington to a Denver trauma center. Duncan was transported by Imperial EMS to the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial and was later flown to a trauma center in Denver. Sheriff Kevin Mueller said both Barrington and Duncan have life-threatening injuries.
The sheriff thinks the accident happened about 4 a.m. A 911 call came into the sheriff’s dispatch center about 6:30 a.m.
Mueller said Barrington failed to negotiate a curve in the road, the ATV struck an embankment and rolled at least 3 1/2 times. Sheriff’s officers are investigating the possibility that drugs and/or alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.
A report on the accident indicates it appears that the ATV’s lap and shoulder belts were not used.
