MNB drops two tourney finales

WAVERLY, Neb. — They reached double digits in hits again, but McCook National Bank Seniors still dropped a 7-5 battle to Waverly Saturday afternoon.

MNB outhit, 11-7, which followed 14 hits during an 11-5 win over Lincoln High on Friday.

However, tourney host Waverly twice wiped out MNB leads. McCook (11-7 record) would also a later game against Ralston, 13-3, and finished 1-3 at this tournament.

The Seniors started fast with three runs before Waverly took its first swing.

Pitcher James Mockry singled home Logan Greenlee for the game’s first run. Greenlee had reached thanks to a dropped third strike.

Mockry moved on to third base before motoring home on a Seth Dugger two-out base hit.

All that set up McCook’s biggest blast as Spencer Krysl crushed his second triple of the season for a 3-0 MNB lead.

Derek Greenlee would match Krysl’s blast, tripling in Clayton Stevens after Waverly caught the seniors, 3-3.

Top hitter Cameryn Berry quickly singled home Greenlee to make it 5-3. Berry’s hitting .476 with 14 RBIs through the first 18 games.

However, Waverly rallied again and finally took the lead in its 7-5 victory.

A 7-0 seventh inning broke open what was a close battle against MNB through six frames.

McCook managed just one hit beyond Berry’s three-for-four effort. Waverly totaled 12 hits.

The Seniors return to play at area foe Imperial Wednesday evening.
