Pinnacle boys fight off Cozad

Friday, June 15, 2018

McCOOK, Neb. — A furious five-run Cozad rally couldn’t stop Pinnacle Bank from building its win streak to five with the 10-9 home win Thursday evening.

The McCook boys (6-4 record) built a 10-4 advance thanks to Cameron Werkmeister’s two doubles, three RBIs from Jayden Karp and eight different players scoring runs.

The margin was only 4-3 until Jarrett Walter jolted a two-run double past Cozad fielders. Cole Thomas and Carson Garcia both motored home on the clutch Walter hit.

Walter’s blast also ignited a seven-run Pinnacle third inning.

Karp (single), Werkmeister (two-run double) and Nate Reiners (single) all delivered to make it 10-3 for coach Greg Larson’s team.

Werkmeister nearly pitched a complete game, striking out eight Cozad batters.

Yet with the big lead almost gone, Garcia relieved and struck out those final two visitors for a huge save.

Pinnacle Bank has brilliantly turned around since a 1-4 start. The team has scored 10 or runs or more in all five consecutive wins.

Isaac Hinze (one hit) and Walter both scored a team-high two runs.

Layne Stevens, Karp, Werkmeister, Reiners, Garcia and Thomas touched home one time each.

Reiners ripped one of the four Pinnacle doubles during this contest.

Pinnacle Bank batters only struck out twice all game while drawing nine walks to go with seven hits.

Hinze, Stevens and Thomas each stole a base to keep the pressure on Cozad.

Watch for more details about their upcoming contests.
