McCOOK, Neb. — Marvin Pete Lorentz, age 90, of McCook, passed away on Dec. 29, 2017, in McCook. He was born in Herndon, Kan., on March 24, 1927, to Pete and Anna (Wudtke) Lorentz. Marvin was drafted in his junior year of high school (1945) to serve in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands preparing for the invasion of Japan. Marv was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army on Dec.22, 1946. He returned to high school, where he graduated from Herndon High School.

Marv worked in Herndon and St. Francis at service stations after his return from the service. On Sept. 13, 1953, he was untied in marriage to Dixie Springer at Herndon. The couple celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this past year.

Marv was asked in 1969 to move to McCook by Standard Oil Company to operate a station. Marvin retired from his station (Marv's Standard) in 1985. He and Dixie were both active in the community. Marv was an active member of the Toy Box, McCook Humane Society, McCook National Bank Senior Activities, and SPUCC (South Platte Chamber of Commerce) for 18 years.

He was a 50-year member of the Memorial United Methodist Church, McCook VFW, American Legion, Elks and the Eagles Club. Marv was one of the first members of McCook to take the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He later was privileged to help place a Memorial Wreath at Arlington National Cemetery at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was also presented a flag by Sen. Ben Nelson that was flown over the nation’s capital. Marv enjoyed hunting deer and pheasants, tinkering with all sorts of gadgets taking them apart and putting them back together. He and Dixie could be seen dancing at least once a week somewhere in the area.

Marv was preceded in death by his parents; son, Scott in 1993; sister, Betty and her husband, Robert Smith; sister-in-law, Evelyn Lorentz; and brother-in-law, Jim Rippetoe.

Surviving Marv is his wife, Dixie, of McCook; daughter, Kathy and husband, Kevin Custer of McCook; sisters, Dorothy and husband, Keith Alstrom of Oberlin, Kan., Hazel Rippetoe of Del City, Okla., and Eleanor and husband, Elden Odle, of Prairie View, Kan.; brother, Clarence Lorentz of Herndon; many nieces and nephews.

Inurnment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 3 p.m.
