Short meeting expected for City Council Monday

McCOOK, Neb. — Changing the wording in a nuisance abatement city ordinance is the only action item for the McCook City Council meeting on Monday, 6:30 p.m. at City Council chambers at McCook Municipal building.

The council first approved the revised language of the ordinance at the May 7 council meeting. This is the second reading of the amended ordinance.

The amended ordinance will require that notice will be filed with the Red Willow County Register of Deeds on any properties that currently have abatement issues/Board of Health proceedings pending. This way, if a house is put on the market for sale, prospective buyers will be aware of the proceedings, City Manager Nate Schneider said at the May 7 meeting.

Also changed in the ordinance was the wording “shall” to “may,” regarding abatement of a property declared a public nuisance. The wording was changed to “may” as the city does not have the means to abate all properties deemed a nuisance in the city, Schneider said.

Consent agenda items, that can be approved in one motion or pulled for discussion by the council, city staff, or members of the public, include:

– Approve an application from Great Plains Communications to occupy City right-of-way for the purpose of installing underground fiber optic cable to provide service to McCook National Bank at 401 West 5th Street.

– Adopt a resolution amending the adopted City of McCook Drug and Alcohol Policies, City of McCook Public Transportation Substance Abuse policy: the city has been notified by the Nebraska Department of Roads that federal drug and alcohol regulations changed and this resolution would update the city’s policy to be in compliance with the changes.

– Receive the minutes of the Senior Center Advisory Board meetings dated Oct. 3, 2017 and Jan. 2, 2018, the March 14, 2018 Library Advisory Board meeting, and the May 14, 2018 Planning Commission meeting

– Approve the proclamation designating the week of May 20 - 26, 2018 as “National Public Works Week” and authorize the Mayor to sign

– Receive and file the financial report for the quarter ending April 30, 2018.
