Area athletes excel in Best of The Midwest

SUTHERLAND, Neb. — Chase County won six events to lead a strong contingent of area placers at Tuesday’ “Best Of The Midwest” track-field meet.

Allison Owings (shot put) and Mallie McNair (400 meters) won individual titles while representing the two-time Class C state champion Longhorns.

Chase County boys captured both the 400 and 1600-meter relays besides Kaiden Vrbas claiming a 100-meter dash victory.

Vrbas started the winning 400-meter relay which also featured Scott Wheeler, Shane Rowley and Juan Venegas.

Venegas, Caleb Weiss, Wheeler and Francisco Barrientos were 1600-relay winners.

Wauneta-Palisade senior Faith Simpson powered her way to the discus title. She also took second among discus throwers.

Athletes are building momentum for district meets now just more than one week away.
