Lady Indians sweep Sunday doubleheader

McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook Community College Lady Indian softball team took a pair of games Sunday against Northeastern Junior College winning the first game 11-3 and coming from behind to win the second game 9-4.

In the opener the Lady Indians scored at least two runs in every inning and won in five innings. In the second game, freshman Isabel Serna (Roy, Utah) delivered a two-run home run in the fifth inning and followed that up with a three-run home run in the sixth inning to give MCC the final margin of victory in the 9-4 win. For the day she had five hits and drove in seven runs.

Fellow frosh Rylee Younger (Thornton, Colo.) also had a big day at the plate with five hits of her own, including a pair of doubles and a home run. Freshman Emily Charchuk (Victoria, British Columbia) also had five hits on the afternoon.

Sophomore Alexis Moeaki (Las Vegas, Nevada) had a pair of hits in the first game and three RBIs and added a double and single in the second game with another RBI to give her 64 for the season, which ties her for the league RBI lead. Serna’s seven RBIs moves her into a tie for fourth place with 44 runs driven in this season.

Taya Thorpe (Malad, Idaho) picked up the win in both games to give her a league-high 17 wins. She struck out 15 hitters Sunday to bring her total on the season to 162, also a league-best.

The Lady Indians improve to 23-21 and improve to 10-16 in conference play. Northeastern Junior College falls to 17-25 and 9-17 in conference.

MCC plays a road doubleheaders at Scottsbluff Tuesday and Beatrice Saturday before returning home Sunday for one last home game against Western Nebraska. The game is also Booster Club Day and free hot dogs will be served during the baseball and softball doubleheaders scheduled. The Lady Indians take on Western Nebraska at 11 a.m. Sunday while the Indian baseball team plays Northeastern Junior College starting at 1 p.m.

The Lady Indians will then hits the road three times to end the season with games at North Platte April 14, Columbus April 20 and April 23 at Seward to play Concordia JVs.

GAME 1: MCC 11, Northeastern JC 3

The Lady Indians scored two runs in the first, added two more on a Rylee Younger home run in the second, tacked up three runs in the third inning and two each in the fourth and fifth to make a winner of Taya Thorpe (16-19) on the season. She allowed three earned runs in five innings of work, walked three and struck out 11 Plainswomen.

MCC had 14 hits in the game with three from Emily Charchuk, and two each from Chanel Siebenthal (Lakewood, Colo.), Alexis Moeaki, Isabel Serna and Rylee Younger.

GAME 2: MCC, 9, Northeastern JC 4

MCC’s offense started slow and the Plainswomen to a 2-0 in the third before MCC posted a single run in the third on a Kaylee Wengren (Taylorsville, Utah) sacrifice fly and took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a double off the bat of McKenzie Bond (LaSalle, Colo.) only to see NJC score two runs in the fifth to lead 4-3.

After an Emily Charchuck double to lead off the fifth, Alexis Moeaki singled in front of Isabel Serna’s two-run home run to give the Lady Indians a 6-4 lead. In the sixth a Moeaki single and a walk by Jerusha Miner (Gunnison Valley, Utah) set the stage for Serna’s three-run home run.

MCC had 15 hits, with three each from Serna and Rylee Younger, and two-hit games from Charchuk, Moeaki and Kathy MacDiarmid (Spring Creek, Nevada.)

Taya Thorpe started and finished the game and pitched 5.1 innings to pick up the win (17-19). She allowed two earned runs, scattered five hits, walked three and struck out four. Kayla Harrison (Richmond, British Columbia) pitched 1.2 innings, allowed one earned run and three hits.
