BENKELMAN, Neb. — An early morning fire in Benkelman Tuesday destroyed two homes and a garage, although a family of six escaped with their lives and the clothes on their backs.

The Benkelman News reports that the Roy Shapley family awoke to glass breaking in the adjacent mobile home and quickly evacuated their home. The fire spread from a mobile home owned by Kristie Pankonin, who does not live in Benkelman, to the garage and then to the Shapley home.

Firefighters saved two nearby mobile homes.

Fire chief Relgene Zimbelman told the News that the American Red Cross and the Dundy County Ministerial Alliance are responding to the needs of the Shapley family.
