Wednesday, February 28, 2018
Raider Nation arrived in force Tuesday night but the Medicine Valley boys couldn’t stop powerful 22-1 Paxton from winning this D1-5 district championship game at North Platte High School. The Raiders were one of three area boys’ teams who reached district finals this week only to fall one win short of the state tourney.

Nebraska boys’ high school basketball concluded for Gazette-area teams 2017-18 Tuesday evening.

Here’s a rundown of the best records and wins:

Arapahoe (18-7). A 55-48 home win over Cambridge on Feb. 6, avenging the Warriors’ three-point RPAC semifinal defeat less than two weeks earlier.

Cambridge (18-8). Without a doubt, the historic RPAC tourney title capped by giving Paxton its only defeat in 23 games this season, 45-41, on Jan. 26.

Dundy-County Stratton (16-7). Another Cattle Trail tournament title run featuring wins over Arapahoe and subdistrict champ Medicine Valley. There was also a 73-70 overtime home win against Cambridge and 58-57 vs. Southwest.

Wauneta-Palisade (15-8). The high-scoring Broncos did their best with an 82-79 win against DC-S on Feb. 16. They overcame a 30-point Tiger fourth quarter by putting 28 on their scoreboard.

Medicine Valley (13-9). The Raiders remained strong following their state semifinal football playoff run. Their best win also arrived late, a 67-48 subdistrict finals win over Arapahoe. They avenged an earlier 19-point defeat.

Chase County (11-12). Quite a turnaround considering the Longhorns started 1-8. They surged to an SPVA tournament title with wins over Sutherland, Bridgeport and 43-41 over North Platte St. Patrick’s on Jan. 20.

McCook (11-13). The Bison stunned 17-6 Cozad with their 17-point win, 60-43, on Cozad’s home floor Feb. 15.

They also avenged a 36-point loss to Hastings, winning 60-58 at McCook on Jan. 12.
