Busy week for MCC campus
McCOOK, Neb. — McCook Community College embarks on one of the busiest weeks on campus with six home basketball games, fund-raising events for four MCC organizations, the opening of the play “And The Rains Came To Mayfield” and -- weather permitting -- the start of the spring home baseball and softball seasons.
It all starts Tuesday with double-header basketball action against North Platte Community College with “Blue-Out” night, and the announcement of homecoming royalty. The women play at 5:30 p.m. and the men’s game is set for 7:30 p.m. with the winner to claim the Nebraska Community College Athletic Association championship.
MCC’s Phi Theta Kappa is partnering with the “A Walk In My Shoes” organization to help raise awareness and money for children and adults with disabilities. PTK sold raffle tickets for a chance to sit in the “best seat in the house” – a sofa/recliner from Samway Floor Covering & Furniture – to watch both games courtside. Students from MCC’s Success Classes will run the free-throw shooting contests for prizes during the halftimes of both games. Pom poms and shirts will be available for sale. Money raised will be donated to “Walk In My Shoes.”
Mr. and Ms. MCC will be crowned that night. MCC students, faculty and staff have been voting since earlier in the month. A student senate-sponsored dance will take place after the games.
MCC’s NYATG (Not Your Average Theater Group) will be duct-taping MCC Vice President Andy Long to the wall to raise funds for a theater-trip to Denver or Omaha this spring. The taping begins in the second half of the women’s game and will continue through half-time of the men’s game.
On Wednesday the MCC baseball team is scheduled to play its first game this season at the Jaycees Sports Complex. The Indians play Colby at 3 p.m. then play Hastings College JV. Thursday at 3 p.m.
Thursday is opening night for the MCC Theater Department’s play “And The Rains Came To Mayfield.” Performances are set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. at the Weeth Theater in Tipton Hall and a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday. There are no admission charges, but donations are accepted.
On Friday MCC’s basketball teams take on Region IX foe Western Nebraska in games at 5;30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. Spotlight Studios dancers will perform at halftime and MCC students will come to the game dressed as “super heros.”
On Saturday, area chefs will compete in the 18th annual Dick Driml Chili Cook-off with judging set for 11 a.m. and chili served from 11:30 a.m. until half-time of the men’s game or until all the chili is gone. This is a fund-raiser for the MCC Music department. Also Phi Beta Lambda will provide desserts for the event including auction items as well as individually-priced desserts.
The women’s softball team will open its home season at noon Saturday against Colby and then also play Williston State at 4 p.m.
Also at 2 p.m. the women’s basketball team will play the final home game of the season and a tribute to MCC Sophomores will take place before the game as the Lady Indians take on Eastern Wyoming.
The MCC men also plan a sophomore tribute before the start of the 4 p.m. game against Eastern Wyoming.
