HAYES CENTER, Neb. ó Dean T. Hansen, age 85, of Hayes Center, passed away Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at Community Hospital of McCook.
Dean was born July 21, 1932, to parents, Hans Peter and Helen May (Barnes) Hansen in Hayes Center. He was one of five children who grew up in Hayes Center, graduating from Hayes Center High School in 1950.
Dean married Shirley Ann Beebe in Oberlin, Kan., on April 28, 1952. They were blessed with five children: Thomas, Jerry, Betty, Mary and Nancy. Dean was employed at John Deere in McCook, than as a Marshall of Hayes County and city maintence worker for the City of Hayes Center, before the family moved to Lincoln, Neb., in 1978. While residing in Lincoln, Dean worked for Lincoln Steel Company and the City of Lincoln, before his retirement in 1999. The family attended East Lincoln Christian Church, where Dean also served as a deacon.
Upon their return to the Hayes Center community, Dean worked from his garage as a mechanic and also served on the town board, but what he enjoyed most was being called grandpa.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Hans and Helen Hansen; wife, Shirley Hansen in 2003; son, Thomas Hansen; grandson, James Dean VanCura; and step-granddaughter, Heather Raker.
Dean is survived by his son, Jerry (Susan) Hansen of Brooksville, Ky.; daughters, Betty (Earl) Raker of Hayes Center, Mary (Derek) Jensen of Reindeck, Iowa, and Nancy (Harvey) Raker of Hayes Center; daughter-in-law, Virginia Hansen of Anaheim, Calif.; brother, Delbert Hansen of Brule, Neb.; sisters, Doris Messersmith of McCook, Neb., Leah (Fred) Unger of Hayes Center and Shirley (Bill) Ashley of Culbertson, Neb.; 19 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 s.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, 2018, at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Hayes Center, with Pastors Jerry Hansen and Jean Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Hayes Center Cemetery.
Memorials may be made in Deanís Honor to be designated at a later date.
