Roll out the big mats for 19 state wrestlers

OMAHA, Neb. — Every area school with close to a full wrestling team will be represented when Nebraska’s state tournament gets undreway on Thursday.

The talent’s well-balanced as 19 wrestlers have qualified by conquering strong district tests last weekend.

Cambridge brings three D-2 champs and four overall into the Century Link Center.

Seniors Matthew Pearson (182 pounds), Seth Andrews (220) and Tyler Schultz (285) all won district titles at Oakland-Craig High School on Saturday.

Junior Zack Miller-Sickels (126) completes that Trojan quartet.

The McCook Bison and Southwest Roughriders are both sending three to Omaha for three days of elite wrestling matches.

Senior Kaleb Taylor will be eager to avenge his first loss all season when he begins Class B 220-pound competition.Taylor dropped a 10-5 title match on Saturday at Gothenburg to Holdrege senior Bronson Titus. They were ranked 1-2 in Class B entering the B-4 tourney.

Freshman Alec Langan (182) and junior Trevor Felber (113) are first-time qualifiers joining Taylor. Langan took second in the B-4 meet.

All three Southwest wrestlers are making repeat state appearances: seniors Cody Downey (195), Anthony Starr (220) and junior Kaden Guerrero (126).

Another returner is also the region’s only unbeaten wrestler this season: Chase County senior Aaron Hinojosa boasts a 44-0 record at Class C 220.

Others to watch are Hitchcock County’s dynamic senior duo of Wyatt Standiford (152) and Zach Janousek (126).

Southern Valley senior Chase Becker (160) has 40 wins this season. Teammate Shawn Andersen (145) joins him on the Class C state mat.

Dundy County-Stratton’s combo of senior Dakota Ehart (285) and junior Brandon Warman (113) bring excellent records into state.

Senior Tyler Kapperman (120) represents the Arapahoe Warriors again along with Medicine Valley Raider Austin Wolfe (195). More results and details from the district tournaments last weekend can be seen today on Pages 12 and 13.
