Bison swimmers second, host meet today

HASTINGS, Neb. — McCook’s swimmers won five championships and took second at a double dual on Friday leading into today’s home meet.

The Bison edged North Platte, 43-41, with a balanced attack featuring three individual girls champions.

Senior leader Shayne Coleman delivered another 100-free victory, finishing in 56.05 while North Platte’s Izzy Eisenrich was second at 58.33.

Bison teammate Kerrigan Burns gave McCook two of the top five places (fifth/1:08.58).

Mollie Tate was too much for 100-breast rivals as she won by nearly seven seconds (1:14.93) over Hastings’ Meghan Tines (1:21.27).

The Bison were more dominating with two of top three places. Sophomore Elizabeth Barenberg earned that third-place finish in 1:24.42.

Barenberg was busy with the 200-individual medley and she took first (2:48.2) by seven seconds over Hastings’ Hayden Stephenson (2:55.69).

The Bison then teamed to do what they so often achieve: dominating relay races.

They won the 200-free relay (1:47.6) with Laurel Schmidt, Becca Tietz, Tate and Coleman capturing this victory.

A second Bison relay of Barenberg, Burns, Marketa Maleckova and senior Emily Jacobs zoomed into third place at 2:02.66.

McCook’s 200-medley team delivered one more championship but names were not obtained. The foursome finished in 1:59.42, ahead of North Platte again (2:01.85).

Another Bison relay featuring Burns, senior Kylee Hauxwell, Barenberg and Maleckova placed third (2:32.63).

McCook’s next highest placer was the 400-free relay of 4:04.28. Schmidt, Tietz, Tate and Coleman finished just narrowly behind North Platte’s 4:04.24.

Hastings’ 57 points secured the team title.

The Bison boys scored 16 points for thierd in Friday’s double dual.

State-qualifying diver Syd Wier (third, 320.50) and contender Caige Eaton (fifth, 245.85) led the Bison while Timothy Renner finished fourth in his 50-freestyle (25.47).

The Bison host their invite today (3:30 p.m.) at McCook’s YMCA.
