Area wrestlers compete at Chase County Invite

IMPERIAL, Neb. -- Chase County had a Gazette-best fifth-place finish at its own Chase County Invitational on Saturday.

The host Longhorns scored 113 team points to finish fifth in the standings.

Evan Fisher (170) and Aaron Hinojosa (220) took gold for the Longhorns. Hinojosa improved to 25-0 on the season with his 5-0 day, while Fisher improved to 17-9 with five victories.

Caine Haarberg finished third at 182. After losing to Perkins County’s Beau Wood, Haarberg rebounded to defeat Ogallala’s Logan Hansmeier at complete pool play with a 3-1 record.

Kenyan Biesecker (126), Brit Gockley (106), Logan Mendenhall (138) and Caleb Weiss (145) all finished fifth in their respective weight classes.

Mikael Kuhlmann (152) and Levi Nance (160) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, for Chase County.

Hitchcock County was seventh with 85 points. The Falcons were led by Wyatt Standiford’s 5-0 day at 152.

Standiford won a narrow 6-5 decision over Gordon-Rushville’s Conner Halverson in the championship semifinals before winning by fall over Case Rieber of Burlington, Colo., for the title.

Zach Janousek (120) and Noah Standiford (138) finished second in their respective weight classes.

Seth Hare (fourth place at 126) and Remington Hodges (sixth, 220) also placed for the Falcons.

Dundy County-Stratton tied for 11th with 45 points.

The Tigers’ Brenden Warman had the team’s best day with a gold-medal win at 113. In the first-place match, Warman won by fall at the 0:24 mark over Ogallala’s Lazaro Perez.

Wesley Throckmorton made the consolation match of 152, but lost to finish fourth. Graeson Stillwagoner (fifth, 285), Matthew Wissink (seventh, 120) and Delton Haines (eighth, 220) also placed for the Tigers.

Wauneta-Palisade finished 14th with five points. Evan Nordhausen took sixth place at 106 to score all of the Broncos’ team points. Willis Chritner (160) also competed for Wauneta-Palisade.

Ogallala won a narrow team title over Bridgeport. The Indians had 181 points to finish first, while the Bulldogs were second with 180.5 points. Burlington was third with 134.5 points.
