Area wrestlers compete at Geneva, Pleasanton over weekend

GENEVA, Neb. -- Southern Valley finished eighth at Saturday’s Fillmore Central Holiday Tournament in Geneva.

The Eagles received points from five of its six wrestlers, with their best result coming from Chase Becker’s first-place finish at 160. Becker improved to 20-3 on the season after winning a 7-4 decision over Palmer’s Spencer Wichmann in the championship match.

Jared Bennet made the championship match at 126, but suffered a fall to Doniphan-Trumbull’s Austen Spike at the 4:43 mark. Bennet is now 15-5 on the season.

Other Eagles to score points were Skyler Grossnicklaus at 132 (fifth place), Pete Brown at 145 (sixth place) and Shawn Anderson at 152 (seventh place).

Southern Valley’s only other wrestler Saturday was Chet Fisher, who went 1-3 at 106.

As a team, Southern Valley finished with 68 points. York won the tournament with 197.5 points, while Oakland-Craig (131.5 points) and Palmer (131) rounded out the top-three.

Warriors 13th at Pleasanton

PLEASANTON, Neb. -- Arapahoe placed six wrestlers at Saturday’s Kurt Keaschall Invite held at Pleasanton High School.

The Warriors’ best result came from Tyler Kapperman, who finished third at 120. Kapperman defeated his first three opponents by fall before dropping matches to Koby Smith of Elm Creek and Shaye Wood of Central Valley to finish third in the round-robin format.

Skyler Warburton finished fifth at 220 for Arapahoe’s next-best result. Warburton won by fall over Kearney Blue’s Coleden Grassmeyer at the 4:03 mark of the fifth-place match.

Jackson Koller (138), Jonah Shimmin (126) and Shane Sieja (113) all took sixth place, while Branigan Schaben (160) took seventh and John Lee (145) was eighth.

As a team, the Warriors scored 40 points to take 13th in the standings. Burwell, won the invite with 220.5 points.
