Wauneta-Palisade boys and girls notch wins over Wallace

Friday, December 1, 2017

WAUNETA, Neb. -- Wauneta-Palisade showed no signs of rust in the Lady Broncos’ season-opening game Thursday night.

The Lady Bronco trio of Faith Simpson, Mo Gooden and Destiny Beacham combined for 46 points to lead Wauneta-Palisade in a 58-15 win over Wallace.

“We got into a little foul trouble early, but our depth on the bench really helped with that,” said Wauneta-Palisade head coach Matt Cox. “I liked our tempo. We got out and got some good looks in transition and rebounded extremely well.”

That tempo helped the Lady Broncos build a 34-10 lead at halftime, then a 50-11 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Despite the numbers, Cox said the offense showed room for growth.

“It was a great start to the season, but we had a lot of unforced turnovers and missed a ton of layups. We’ve got a lot of room for improvement.”

On the other end of the court, Cox was happy with his team’s defense.

“We started off the season with a lot of defensive focus.”

Wauneta-Palisade (1-0 record) was led by Simpson’s double-double. She had 17 points and 12 steals to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Gooden had 16 points, while Beacham added 13.

The Lady Broncos’ top rebounder was Dakota Ingold, who hauled in nine boards.

Wallace (0-1) was led by Hailey Brooks and Ansley Wood, who both scored four points.

Wauneta-Palisade is back in action tonight (Friday) with a road game at McPherson County.
