Police, deputies, NSP involved in high-speed chase from McCook to Wallace

McCOOK, Neb. — A 34-year-old McCook man sits in jail today after leading law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase through four counties Wednesday afternoon.

The man hasn’t been arraigned yet, but most likely faces charges of felony flight to avoid arrest, according to Red Willow County Sheriff’s Deputy Sgt. Steve Kotschwar.

Kotschwar said the man fled after a deputy attempted to stop him at West Fourth and C, on an active Red Willow County warrant charging him with a sex offender registry violation.

The chase led from West Fourth and C, west and north of McCook, into Frontier County and across Hayes County, on unpaved county roads and at speeds of 50 to 80 miles an hour. At one point, the man attempted to ram Kotschwar’s patrol vehicle.

Red Willow County Sheriff Alan Kotschwar said the chase ended when the man pulled into an abandoned farmstead near Wallace, in Lincoln County, “and had nowhere else to go.” He was arrested without further incident and returned to the county jail in McCook. A dog accompanying the man was lodged at the McCook Humane Society animal shelter.

There were no injuries during the chase.

Involved in the chase were officers from the Red Willow County Sheriff’s Department, McCook Police Department, sheriff’s departments from Frontier and Chase counties, and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Sgt. Kotschwar said that reports will be forwarded to Red Willow County Attorney Paul Wood, and officials in other counties involved.

Sgt. Kotschwar said he very much appreciated the assistance from cooperating law enforcement agencies, and the performance of dispatchers with the McCook Police Department.
