JD Wing, a professional horse trainer at the T-Cross Ranch at Pueblo, Colo., removes the halter from “Star,” his student this morning during a training demonstration at the 10th annual McCook Farm & Ranch Expo on the Red Willow County Fairgrounds. Nine-year-old Star belongs to Billie Jo and Todd Hueftle of rural McCook; Billie explains, with a grin, that they bought her “used, and like a used car, she came with some issues.” Working on the ground and in the saddle, Wing addressed Star’s disrespectful behavior on the ground and her lack of manners. “The backside of this horse, you never want to face you,” he said. Wing will work with local owners’ horses in presentations at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. today and Thursday, inside the Kiplinger Arena. Expo coordinator Darren Dale has nearly 400 vendors in six buildings and on the grounds at this year’s show, which runs today through 7 p.m., and Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free of charge.
