Robert James Broomfield

June 8, 1944 - Nov. 9, 2017

LINCOLN, Neb. — Robert James Broomfield (Bob), 73, passed away on Nov. 9, 2017, unexpectedly, yet peacefully, at his home in Lincoln.

The son of James and Geneva (Ruggles) Broomfield, he was born June 8, 1944, in McCook, Neb. He had two older siblings, Elda and Bill. They were raised on a farm in Red Willow County.

Bob attended McCook Community College on a football, basketball and track scholarship and then graduated from Doane College on a track scholarship. He spent most of his professional life as a superintendent of schools.

Bob enjoyed a full life and never met a stranger. He enjoyed the simple pleasures best. He enjoyed sports, reading, hunting, spending time with his grandchildren, the great outdoors, a good story and happy hour. Bob had few regrets as he lived life to the fullest, always did the best he could to be productive, and understood that the rest is up to God.

Bob is survived by his wife, MJ; three children, Kelly, Rob (Jackie), Carrie (Ryan) Sullivan; five grandchildren, Megan, Nick, Max, Payton, and Jameson; two step-children, Becky (Nate) Michel, Carolyn (Chris) Ledy; and two step-grandchildren, Owen and Noah Michel; sister, Elda Powley; many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, William “Bill” Broomfield and brother-in-law, Ben Powley.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at First-Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 D St, Lincoln, with Rev. Barbara Smisek officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family for future designation to local area cancer research in memory of his mother, Geneva (Ruggles) Broomfield.

Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.
