Tigers, Falcons rule the roost at RPAC

BERTRAND, Neb. -- Dundy County-Stratton and Hitchcock County ran to team titles at Thursday’s Republican Plains Activities Conference cross country meet at Bertrand.

The Tigers won the boys’ team title while the Lady Falcons were first place in the girls’ competition.

The boys’ race was won by DCS’ Philip Boyd, who ran a 17:35.72. Tiger teammate Damon Latta was second at 17:44.41, while Eustis-Farnam/Medicine Valley’s Nathan Nicklas was third with 17:47.87.

Cambridge’s Zach Miller (18:39.48) and DCS’ Brendan Warman (18:43.73) rounded out the top-five.

DCS won the team title with 12 points thanks to four top-five finishers. Bertrand-Loomis scored 41 points to finish runner-up at its home course.

The Tigers’ average time of 18:15.73 was over one minute better than the Wolfkings’ 19:22.35.

Maywood-Hayes Center was third with 46 points. The Wolves’ best runners finished as a pack, as Logan Littrel (12th, 19:21.36), Eli Handsaker (13th, 19:23.27), Luis Fuentes (14th, 19:34.17) and Max Diaz (15th, 19:38.07) all finished in consecutive, medaling places.

Alma-Southern Valley took fourth with 62 points and were led by Ivan Varela’s ninth-place time of 19:14.60. Billie Paine and Colten Fischer finished 17th and 18th, respectively.

Rounding out the top-five teams was Cambridge with 87 points. Miller was the Trojans’ lone medalist, but other finishes included Jessie Evans at 28th, Bobby Evans at 31st, Tracy Evans at 39th and Chance Westadt at 40th.

Paxton (107) and Arapahoe (124) were sixth and seventh in team scoring.

In the girls’ race, Sable Lambley continued to rule her conference counterparts. The DCS sophomore ran a 19:38.10 to finish nearly one-and-a-half minutes ahead of runner-up Tahjzha Botts of Maxwell, who had a time of 21:02.22.

Hitchcock County’s Amanda Mote was third with 21:45.89, while Paxton’s Adrian Eakings (22:04.53) and Cambridge’s Cali Gunderson (22:23.77) rounded out the top-five.

The Lady Falcons soared above their competition with four runners in the top-eight to win the girls’ team title. In addition to Mote, Mary Carpenter (sixth, 22:46.88), Savannah Beegle (seventh, 22:47.47) and Jasmine Youngquist (eighth, 22:54.50) scored low points for the conference champions.

Hitchcock County’s 18 team points were half of runner-up Bertrand-Loomis, which scored 36. The Wolfkings were led by 10th-place Karmen Schmitt.

Other area runners to medal included MHC’s Kayla Minary (ninth) and Makena Roberts (12th), Southwest’s Kylea Stritt (14th) and Cambridge’s Sioban Donohue (15th).

DCS took third with 53 points, while Maxwell was fourth with 54. EFMV rounded out the team scoring with 71 points.
