McCOOK, Neb. -- It’s not a match you’ll see in the regular season, but it was one both teams needed.

Monday saw Class B McCook take on Class C2 Dundy County-Stratton in a preseason Jamboree match played at the Peter & Dolores Graff Events Center, with the Lady Bison coming out on top in all five sets for a 5-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-8, 25-19, 15-12) victory.

The match helped both coaches assess their squads and see where they stood heading into next week.

“I thought we had a lot of hitting errors tonight,” said McCook head coach Dennis Troester. “At times we did good on the block and times we didn’t get things sealed. There were times we did some good things.”

Despite the result, DCS head coach Bill Wilson knew Monday’s match was an opportunity for his team to get better playing a quality opponent.

“We knew we’d have to play our best to be in this game and we didn’t. Not even close,” he said. “We can play a lot better than that, but, like I told the girls, this was just practice. We can take this as an opportunity to play at the (McCook) community college and it’s a lot more fun playing against somebody else.”

DCS' Sydney Reichert (5) and Adalene Krutsinger (3) go up for a tip against McCook's Jaden Bryant Monday night.

Troester echoed those sentiments, even though DCS isn’t a team his Lady Bison will face in the regular season.

“That’s the big thing. It’s nice to see someone different. They’ve got some good players. The Frederick girl (Grace), no doubt, is a very good ball player. This was a chance to get the cobwebs out and see what you’re gonna do in front of a bunch of people.”

Both teams now move into their regular season schedules. McCook opens with a road match at Hastings High Aug. 31, while DCS hosts Wauneta-Palisade Aug. 29.
