McCOOK, Neb. — A 10-year-old Oberlin boy died after his bicycle and a pickup collided Tuesday afternoon on Federal Avenue southwest of McCook.

As of early this morning, the Nebraska State Patrol had not released the name of the boy.

State Patrol Trooper Dan Thompson’s report indicates that the accident happened at 1:20 p.m., when the boy rode his bicycle onto Federal Avenue from a private drive on the north side of Federal into the path of a westbound pickup driven by 37-year-old Jason Stephens of McCook.

The boy was not wearing a safety helmet, according to Thompson.

McCook ambulance personnel transported the boy to Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Stephens was alone in his pickup. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
