The Wilsonville Saddle Club plans its 50th annual and last-ever “Wilsonville Rodeo,” Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, at 1:30 p.m. each day, in the arena on Highway 89. Admission will be $7 for adults, and $3 for children 12 and under. Lunch and T-shirt sales will be available on site. Top performers throughout the years of the rodeo have included barrel racer “Grandma” June Holeman of Arcadia and steer wrestler and calf roper Garrett Nokes of McCook. Holeman, at the age of 70 in February 2014, made the finals in a $1 million rodeo called “The American” in Dallas, Texas, and she is the oldest competitor at the National Finals Rodeo. Nokes qualified for and competed in steer-wrestling in the 2005 National Finals Rodeo and has been honored by the Kiplinger Arena in McCook for his sponsorship and promotion of roping and timed events competitions that bring hundreds of people to the Kiplinger. Nokes is the timed events coach for the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team.
