Bolt cuts short McCook Juniors' rally
McCOOK, Neb. — McCook’s baseball home doubleheader against Cozad turned into no games at all Thursday night.
The Cozad Seniors are not fielding a team this season, then Mother Nature decided juniors didn’t need to play one game that was feeling like two.
A wave of momentum changes had already reached the Jaycee Complex. McCook’s First Central Bank Juniors led 2-1, trailed 3-2, bolted ahead 6-3 only to see Cozad unleash an eight-run third inning.
McCook had rallied again within 11-8 when — whoa! — a single lightning bolt halted play.
Heavier rains soon followed and the game never resumed.
It wiped out a memorable two-RBI single from Dalton Bredvick that gave McCook its 5-3 advantage.
The Juniors’ rally began without needing a big hit.
Josh Carter took one pitch off the arm, James Mockry hustled to an infield single and Morgan Fawver took another baseball off his backside.
Seth Dugger’s bases-loaded, RBI-walk caught Cozad at 3-3 before Bredvick drove a clean single past the infielders.
Both Mockry and Fawver motored home. A throwing error allowed Dugger to score McCook’s sixth run.
However, a variety of home team miscues allowed Cozad to regain an 11-6 lead.
McCook’s Juniors and Seniors will both return to the diamond today with a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader at Gothenburg. The Seniors are 2-0, outscoring Imperial and Ogallala 27-to-zero.
One Legion baseball game completed on Thursday saw the McCook Legion B Cats lose 10-0 at Oxford.
A busy weekend continues for the Seniors at Broken Bow on Saturday and Holdrege Monday evening.
