McCOOK, Neb. ó Public power companies may have sustained up to $1 million in damages in the April 30 blizzard that roared in and out of Red Willow and Furnas counties on 60-mile-an-hour winds and dumped a heavy, wet snow that brought down power lines and snapped off power poles.

To help power companies recover some of their losses, Red Willow County Sheriff and Emergency Manager Alan Kotschwar and Red Willow County commission chairman Earl McNutt have declared a local disaster and are requesting assistance from the State of Nebraska and the Governorís Emergency Fund.

Kotschwar said that Twin Valleys Public Power District estimates $490,000 in damages, and very early estimates from McCook Public Power/REA are between $200,000 and $300,000 in damages.
