MCCOOK, Neb. — Ruth Ellen (Downing) Brosius, age 90, of McCook, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017, at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born Sept. 20, 1926, to Albert Ray and Minnie Ellen (Winters) Downing in rural Rawlins County, Kan., where she grew up. She attended school and graduated from Atwood High School in 1944. She continued her education by going to college in Halstead, Kan., where she studied to become at nurse. She met Don Burton and they were united in marriage and had a son, Kenneth Allen Burton. They later divorced.

She worked in the Veteran’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., in the late 1940s then moved to Wichita, Kan., and worked in Bucks Department Store in the 1950s. There she met Kenneth Brosius and they were married and later separated. In the 1960s she moved back to Atwood, where she and her son lived until the 1970s, before moving to McCook in the 1980s.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Minnie Downing.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Burton and wife, Linda, of Great Bend, Kan.; two grandsons, Clay Burton of Parsons, Kan., and Jeremy Johnston of Augusta, Kan.; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to the McCook Humane Society, specifically for the cats.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 18, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh to extend words of condolences to the family.

A graveside ceremony will be Friday, April 21, 2017, at 2 p.m. in the Fairview Cemetery at Atwood, Kan.
