Cambridge golfer winning tournaments

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Cambridge sophomore Preston Carbaugh topped two players in a championship playoff to win Friday’s Cambridge Invitational.

On a chilly Friday tourney that was rescheduled from Wednesday, Carbaugh still fired a round 80 to match Elm Creek’s Dillon Gilling and Alma’s Eric Kovarik.

Carbaugh then conquered the playoff to take home top honors.

Area golfers proved they could conquer cold elements while earning top five teams among 15 represented at Friday’s Cambridge Invitational.

Southern Valley led the area pack with a 365 for second place, trailing only champion Alma’s 349.

Medicine Valley finished fourth overall with a 384 as Sheldon Johnsen’s 87 topped the Raider lineup.

Host Cambridge also cracked the top five at 405.

Dundy-County Straton placed eighth at 422. Nate Auffet finished eighth by firing 87 across the 18 holes.

Southwest finished 12th at 522.

Top five individuals 1. Preston Carbaugh, Cambridge, 80; 2. Dillon Gilming, Elm Creek, 80; 2. Eric Kovarik, Alma, 80; 4. Blaine Teeter, Hitchcock County, 84; 5. Sam Kulhanek, Overton, 84.

The Trojans moved on to Monday’s Dundy County-Stratton Invitational where Carbaugh finished first again.
