As a young boy, Harold moved from Martin to southern Missouri in an old covered truck bed pulled by a team of horses. The family lived in Missouri until Harold’s father took a job at the Army Air Base north of McCook during World War II. Harold attended school at a country school near the base.

In 1948, Harold’s family moved to Arkansas. Harold choose to stay in McCook to be near his future bride, Phyllis Brunswick. He lived in a bunk house with Phyllis’ brothers on the Brunswick farm. Throughout the years, Harold was employed by Granger Trucking, Co., Drake Oil and as a diesel mechanic for the Nebraska Department of Roads. In his spare time, he was a “shade tree mechanic” who enjoyed long conversations while working on vehicles for his family and friends.

Harold was also a member of the McCook Eagles Club where he and Phyllis spent their Friday nights eating a hamburger for dinner and playing darts or shuffleboard. They competed in many dart and shuffleboard competitions around the state and loved to square dance the night away on the dance floor. The warm summer evenings found Harold and Phyllis sitting in their lawn chairs cheering on coed softball games at the Jaycees Complex near their home. Following his retirement from the Department of Roads, Harold enjoyed driving a truck during wheat and corn harvest, and he also used his diesel mechanic skills to keep everything running smoothly at Heartland Cattle.
