McCOOK, Neb. — Fumble was a word never heard around McCook’s practice football field as three champion relays helped lead the Bison boys’ track and field domination on Friday.

Every exchange of the baton was clean even in chilly conditions that were almost frosty during a 1600-meter final showdown.

Yet Cameryn Berry, Isaac Hegwood, Nolan Priebe and Sam Smith ran through the descending darkness to one more championship.

Their time of 3:35.4 wasn’t far off current Class A leader Omaha Creighton Prep (3:32.85), and it capped a super day where McCook varsity-JV athletes teamed for 359 points.

McCook’s 197 varsity points were more than enough to outscore the two closest challengers combined. Holdrege and Dundy County-Straton totaled 191.

Bison sophomores D.J. Gross and Colin Giron continued throwing a powerful 1-2 punch. They took the top two places in both discus and shot put which ignited McCook’s fab Friday.

Once track events hit full speed, the Bison were steaming ahead behind senior Sam Smith.

Smith won two terrific sprint race titles over Colby super sophomore Jordan Schippers.

Schippers, a terrific three-sport athlete who excelled during his freshman year, pushed Smith through both races. Smith edged him 11.35 to 11.39 in the 100 and 22.63 to 22.76 during their 200-meter race.

McCook’s other individual race victories came from Berry (400, 53.3) and Gavin Klein (3200, 10:25.79).

Klein and Steven Hinze delivered a 1-2 distance race finish.

Relays dominated throughout with Smith running on two to finish his terrific four-championship day. Drew Harvie, Corban Jernigan, Ethan Wilcox, Seth Chancellor, Josh Huff and T.J. Renner ran other legs.

The Bison will pursue more titles at Friday’s Broken Bow Invitational.
