MCC softball team splits home openers

McCOOK, Neb. -- The McCook Community College softball team split with Northeast Community College from Norfolk during their home openers on Friday, winning game one, 4-2, and falling in the night cap, 6-5.

The split puts the Lady Indians at 2-8 for the young season.

Against the Hawks in game one , the Lady Indians would take an early 1-0 lead, but NECC would answer back taking a 2-1 lead after 4.

The big hit came in the bottom of the fifth from McCook's Kendall Yasui, who connected for a two-RBI single to give the Indians the 3-2 lead.

MCC would add an insurance run in the 6th to give the Indians all they would need in the 4-2 victory. Kendall Yasui would led the Lady Indians at the plate going two for three with two RBIs, while Lindsey Fishman and Angelica Evans drove home the other two runs for MCC.

Taya Thorpe was good in the circle for the Lady Indians, going all seven innings, while giving up two runs on four hits, and striking out two.

In the nightcap, MCC would jump out an early 3-0 lead after one inning, but a big sixth inning rally from Northeast would ultimately give the Hawks the win

In that sixthh inning Northeast would get 5 straight 2-out hits to take a 5-4 lead over MCC, chasing Indians' starter Lexie Holm. Holm would go 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.

MCC would tie the ball game at 5-5 in the bottom half, starting with a lead-off double from Cheyanne Herzog, a wild pitch would get Herzog to third and a sac fly from Alexis Ramirez would knot up the game. The Hawks would break the tie in the top of the seventh and the Lady Indians were unable to get anything across in the bottom half, dropping game two 6-5.

McCook High alum and former Bison softball player Moriah Payton earned the win for Northeastern.

She pitched the final three innings, getting those final outs to finish her team's comeback win.

Evans led the way offensively for MCC going with two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Next for the Indians is another home doubleheader against rival, North Platte Community College on March 1, at the Jaycees Sports Complex. First pitch is 5 p.m.
