'Blue ribbon' dance

The entire student body of McCook Elementary Wednesday afternoon was dancing up and down, with principal Tim Garcia "getting down" as well, when the McCook Area Chamber of Commerce presented the school with the first quarter Honor Business award. The award was in recognition of McCook Elementary earning the status of a "Blue Ribbon" school by the U.S. Department of Education. In recognizing the school, the chamber noted its "impact and dedication to preparing future leaders in McCook, making our town a better place to live, work and play." Garcia thanked the teachers for their work with students, and who "without them, this recognition is impossible." "This is not a 'me' mentality but an 'us' mentality," Garcia said at the presentation of the honor business banner, shown with Jamie Mockry, center, chamber president and McCook Schools superintendent Grant Norgaard. The McCook Cordials also presented a plaque to Garcia for the school being the honor business and McCook School Board president Tom Bredvick and Norgaard presented blue ribbon pins to teachers and staff at McCook Elementary. Attending the ceremony were McCook School Board members, chamber members, City of McCook Mayor Mike Gonzales, McCook City Council members and others.
