Rescue effort
From a ladder extended from the city's largest fire truck, McCook firefighters try to rescue a dog who fell through the ice on a pond in Barnett Park about 12:40 p.m., Thursday. The dog's owner fell through the ice as he tried to save the dog, but he was able to get himself out of the water, according to McCook Fire Department firefighter/paramedic Steve Renner. Bystanders alerted emergency personnel. The owner was taken to Community Hospital. The dog didn't make it, and was attended to in the park by staff members of Red Willow Animal Clinic, who were on the scene along with officers of the McCook Police Department. Police Chief Ike Brown reminded everyone that with the up-and-down temperatures lately, the ice on Barnett Park ponds is thin and fragile. "Under no circumstances should anyone be on the ice, or follow an animal onto the ice," Brown said. He also said that all dogs are required to be on leashes when they're off their own property. The owner was very fortunate that he was able to get out of the freezing water, Brown said.
