McCOOK, Neb. -- Downtown McCook was alive with holiday cheer and shoppers looking for just the right gift this weekend, despite record low temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday.

A record low of 13 below was reached Saturday just before midnight, beating the previous record of 12 below set in 1983, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures dropped even further Sunday, reaching a new record of 16 below at 2:58 a.m. and beating the previous record of 15 below set in 1989.

The cold weather was certainly a deterrent to some holiday shoppers, who understandably preferred to avoid the brisk weather by staying in. At least one downtown retailer reported "soft" sales for the weekend but said they were confident sales would pick up as the week leading to Christmas, and hopefully area temperatures, progressed.

As of Monday morning, mostly clear skies and temperatures ranging between a low of 17 and a high of 46 are forecasted through Saturday.

Mostly cloudy skies are forecasted to return Saturday with a 30 percent chance of snow on Christmas Day.
