Chase County handles Sutherland

IMPERIAL, Neb. -- Balanced scoring led to a 68-31 win for the Chase County girls over Sutherland Tuesday in Imperial.

Chase County took a 36-15 lead in the locker room, then proceeded to outscore the Sailors 32-16 in the second half.

The Lady Longhorns were led by freshman Mallie McNair, who had 12 points and two three-pointers. Seniors Destiny Reinke (10 points), Kadyn Milner (9) and Taylin McNair (7) were next in line for Chase County. In all, the Lady Longhorns had 12 players on the scoresheet.

As a team, Chase County (4-1) shot 41 percent on 27-of-66 shooting, including 6-of-20 on three-point attempts. The Lady Longhorns hauled in 36 rebounds while snatching 22 steals. Taylin McNair led the way in both categories, with seven boards and five takeaways.

The boys' contest between Chase County and Sutherland will occur Feb. 17.

Chase County will travel to Yuma, Colo., for a boys and girls doubleheader this Thursday, Dec. 15.


Southwest girls down Cards

BARTLEY, Neb. -- Trailing Alma by one into the fourth quarter did not faze Southwest's Roughrider girls Tuesday evening.

The 'Riders (3-3 record) responded brilliantly, outscoring Alma 12-6 during those last eight minutes of a 38-33 home win.

Sophomore Nicole Dewey delivered 22 huge points to power the Southwest offensive attack just three days removed from a tough three-day Cattle Trail Tournament weekend.

"I'm just really proud of the girls," Roughriders coach Tersen Arnold stated. "They competed hard the entire game and kept battling against a really good Alma team. I'm very pleased with the way we made plays at the end and found a way to win."

Senior Isabella Ryan's six points added to the wnning 'Rider formula while juniors Bailee Springer and Ashley Kragelund contributed four points apiece.

Many of these girls teamed for a big upset of talented Alma in the RPAC volleyball tournament this fall.

Sophomore Caitlyn Smith tallied two more points for Southwest.

The Cardinals dropped to 2-4 this season.

BBB: Alma 53, Southwest 48

Alma did gain a varsity split thanks to the boys' 53-48 win Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals (4-2) soared to a 33-21 halftime lead before fighting off Southwest's second-half comeback.

Senior Drew Hofman's 14 points led the Roughriders while classmate Connor McConville worked inside for 10.

Hofman and sophomore Blake Williams both buried a pair of three-pointers.

Senior Alec May and junior Logan Greenlee added eight points apiece. Greenlee grabbed a team-high eight rebounds The Roughriders (3-3 record) have suffered three defeats by a grand total of nine points.

Freshman Bryan Leslie hit his only two-point shot for the 'Riders.


Trojans plunder Pirates twice

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Elwood Pirates found no treasure in Cambridge against two Trojansquads focused on victory Tuesday evening.

The score was even between Elwood's girls and Alea Shaner, 20-20, but Cambridge teammates provided plenty of help during a 65-20 triumph.

Overall, Cambridge finished a terrific 52.2 percent from two-point range (24 for 46) and 72.7 percent of their free-throw attempts (eight for 11).

Trojan defense also only got tougher throughout this contest. They permitted eight, four, five and three points through the four quarters.

It was a good recovery following Friday's narrow 47-45 Cambridge defeat at Southern Valley.

Coach Jarod Albers' team now gets ready to play another home game against Cozad Thursday evening.

BBB: Cambridge 75, Elwood 31

The Cambridge boys (3-1 record) were equally ready while romping to a 75-31 win in Tuesday's second varsity game.

Individual stats were not obtained.

The Trojans took charge with a 17-10 first quarter that reached 35-19 by halftime.

They didn't lose any intensity during the break as they outscored Elwood 23-5 through quarter three.
