Evelyn R. Meyers

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. -- Evelyn Rose Meyers, age 92, of Cambridge, passed away at the Cambridge Manor on Nov.21, 2016.

She was born on Nov. 14, 1924, to Charles W. and Rosa A. (Riepe) Hilker. Evelyn grew up north of Holbrook. She was baptized on Jan. 11, 1925, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church north of Holbrook. She was later confirmed at St. Matthew's Church on Sept. 25, 1938.

Evelyn attended high school in Holbrook, graduating in 1940. She taught school for three years in School District No. 1 in Gosper County, the same school that her father attended in his younger years. On April 25,1943, she was united in marriage to Victor Meyers at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. The couple farmed near Holbrook.

Active in her church life, Evelyn taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School and served on other boards at St. Matthew's Church, until it closed in 1967. The family continued their faith mission at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge. Evelyn was a charter member of the LWML of St. Paul's. She was active in the Meals on Wheels program.

Evelyn and Victor hosted exchange students from Sweden, Yugoslavia and Japan. She was a 4-H leader for over 25 years. She was a busy mother and grandmother, a homemaker and a baker, cooking large meals for the family.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Victor in 1989; daughter, Jacquelyn in 1971; son, Neal in 2016; son-in-law, Mike Gufford; sister, Maxine Fisher; and brother, Lyman Hilker.

She is survived by her two daughters, Janet and husband, Les Hosick of Wellfleet, Neb., and Lori Gufford of Omaha, Neb.; three sons, Rick and wife, Kate Meyers of Holbrook, David and wife, Linda of Kearney, Neb., and Michael and wife, Carla of Curtis, Neb.; daughter-in-law, Teresa Meyers of Gibbon, Neb.; son-in-law, Keith and wife, Carol Haussler of Hastings, Neb.; special friend, Paul Foreman and his children of Colorado; 21 grandchildren: 44 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Maxine Hilker.

Funeral services will be at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Cambridge on Friday, Nov. 25, 2016, at 10 a.m. with Pastor Bret Hinrichs.

Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 24, 2016, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lockenour-Jones Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mathew's Cemetery of Holbrook.
