Area schools compete at Monday's UNK Invite

KEARNEY, Neb. -- Madison and Sable Lambley met their match in Kearney.

The Lambley sisters finished second and third place to Hastings St. Cecilia's Cameron Hucke at Monday's UNK cross country invitational. Madison finished second in the girls' Class D division with a time of 19:34.8, while Sable finished third with 20:22.4. Hucke won the girls competition with a time of 18:58.8.

Other area finishers in the top-15 were Amanda Mote of Hitchcock County (21:30.8, eighth place) and Cali Gunderson of Cambridge (21:47.5, 13th place).

The Hawkettes won the team competition with 82 points. A close second was Malcolm with 83, while Doniphan-Trumbull (90), North Central (91) and Oakland-Craig (119) rounded out the top five. Dundy Couny-Stratton (157) finished tenth.

In the Class D boys competition, Dundy County-Stratton finished second. The Tigers' 82 points was second only to Malcom's 51. Thayer Central was third with 97, and Bridgeport (100) and Yutan (109) were other top-five finishers. Other area teams were Eustis-Farnam/Medicine Valley (288, 16th place) and Cambridge (303, 18th place).

Individually, Justin Vrooman of Hastings St. Cecilia won the competition with a time of 17:11.9. Dundy County-Stratton's Bailey Peckham was the Gazette's only top-15 finisher with a sixth-place time of 18:07.7.

In Class C girls, Chase County finished 13th place with 228 points. Southern Valley had 433 points for 20th place.

The girls' division champion was Taya Skelton of Fort Calhoun, who had a time of 19:45.7. Skelton is the defending girls state champion. The best Gazette-area finisher was Kaley Hauxwell of Chase County, who finished 22nd with a time of 22:21.74.

For Class C boys, Chase county was 15th with 266 points, while Southern Valley finished 28th with 501 points.

The boys' division champion was Nathan Ostdiek of Columbus Scotus, who had a time of 16:37.6. The best Gazette-area finisher was Will Kuenne of Chase County, who finished 17th with a time of 18:22.83.

The top overall champion at Monday's invite was Jake Ralston of Papillion-La Vista South. Ralston won with a time of 16:12.3.
